Indonesian police open fire to quell riot JAKARTA: One person was killed and 11 wounded when police opened fire on Thursday to quell a riot sparked by the death of a student in police headquarters on central Indonesia’s Sumbawa island, hospital staff and media reports said. Hundreds of people in the town of Sumbawa Besar stormed a police station and set it ablaze, accusing police of responsibility for the death on Wednesday of Mustakim, 22, a local university student, Elshinta radio reported. One person died of gunshot wounds, an official at the local hospital told AFP. He refused to say whether there were injured victims in the hospital but the state Antara news agency said 11 people were wounded in the riot. Provincial police spokesman Muhammad Basri could not immediately confirm the shooting but said 400 to 500 policemen had been deployed to pacify the rampaging mob. "Security measures are currently being enforced in that city," Basri told AFP by telephone from neighboring Lombok island. Lombok and Sumbawa are part of West Nusa Tenggara province. On Wednesday Mustakim was taken by police from a hospital where he was being treated for light injuries sustained in a road accident. Basri said he heard reports that Mustakim was taken to police headquarters after he made trouble in the hospital and later died of an overdose. Elshinta said rioters had also attacked a car belonging to local police chief Bambang Suharno and pelted his house with rocks. Suharno and his deputy were dismissed on Thursday, the station said.
